A W Campbell was the first company to respond to my request. He asked a series of pertinent questions which gave the impression that they were familiar with my type of problem and would be able to offer a solution. I was already deeply involved with them before I received the next message saying they would be in touch with me the next day to discuss my problem. This company didn’t get in touch until late the next day by which time I was so comfortable with A W Campbell’s approach that I was not for the sake of a few pounds savings not hire them. I also liked his quick responses to my emails which suggested that he is someone who responds to his customers quickly as opposed to someone who is too busy with too many customers.This is a classic example of the early bird catching the worm. How can someone tell if their Garage is suitable for conversion?
Most garages are suitable for conversion to habitable rooms - generally planning permission is not required - however building regulations approval will be required.
Run us through the different stages of the Garage conversion process - what's involved?
Garage conversions are usually quite straight forward. Not much stripping out is needed - but additional insulation is required to the walls, floor and roof.
The first step is to insulate the floor and include a damp proof membrane. This can be done over the existing concrete slab and can be finished in timber flooring or sand/cement screed.
This is follows my dry lining the walls including insulation and breather membranes where required.
The roof will need additional insulation - usually between and over the ceiling joists.
How can someone tell if their loft is suitable for conversion?
If your building has a 'cut roof' i.e. it is constructed using purlins, then it is relatively easy to convert - provided there is enough headroom.
I gang nail trusses form the roof then the conversion is more difficult - though not impossible.
Run us through the different stages in the loft conversion process - what’s involved?
Loft conversions require a staircase to gain access - this can take up a lot of room from a lower room - so that must be considered against the benefits of having additional usable space in the loft.
Additional floor joists will be required as the existing ceiling joists will not be strong enough. This reduces the available headroom and should be considered at planning stage.
Insulation between and under the rafters further reduces headroom!
It is quite common to introduce steel beams to support new floor joists as this can reduce the overall thickness of the new floor and save headroom.
