I had a great experience with Anne, Thorsten and the friendly staff at 26'10. My vision for the house was basic but inadvertently complex. My brief was to keep the design true to the general appeal(small,and family friendly)of the estate, and for the living experience to feel connected to the nature reserve which the stand bordered. Thorsten's design concept materialised my aspirations for my family and the location. It was different to any house we had seen in the estate, warm, open, welcoming to passers-by and neighbours, while the family had three facets of interaction:social, individual and family time. What do you love most about your job?
My name is Thorsten Deckler. I am a Namibian / German / South African architect based in Johannesburg. I really love my job. There is nothing more thrilling than creating a building and seeing it through to completion.
But I hear so many stories about out of control projects and I see beautiful neighbourhoods and landscapes compromised by poor design and building work. Rather than complain, I want to create a movement that educates people to make more mindful decisions when it comes to building
What inspired you to start your own business?
26’10 south Architects (say twenty-six ten) was named after the latitude of Johannesburg by founders Anne Graupner and Thorsten Deckler. Back in 2004 this was a clear commitment to one of the most dynamic and challenging cities in the world! We wanted to play a part in its transformation into a more democratic and humane city. 18 years on and 26’10 has built key infrastructure and institutional projects, over 2000 subsidized houses and has initiated a number of events, exhibitions and publications on current themes in architecture and urbanism.

What changes have you made to keep your customers safe from Covid-19?
During the peak pandemic period, we made sure to adhere to all Covid-19 protocols. As we now transition out of this period, it has become more relaxed.

This forms part of stage 1 of architectural services, pre-feasibility. This tests options - if they actually work. This can save time money and disappointment.

This can help save money and help to make more money. An example of this includes flexible but quality designs for a lodge with the use of built in furniture.
