This really is a family favourite. It’s a quiet yet stunning setting. Yes it’s a little run down in places but the cream teas are great value and you get to enjoy them whilst gazing over the stunning countryside with peacocks for company. Weekend only openings or so I believe, so check with Bill in advance. More...

Having read some of the other reviews, I failed to recognise the experience some others had. We were here for 4 nights and had taken 4 rooms for various members of our family . Nothing seemed like too much trouble for our hosts. We were greeted with tea and biscuits as were all the others despite the fact that they turned up at various times during the evening . Our room had commanding views over the countryside, very comfortable four poster bed , lots of storage space, tea and coffee facilities in the room, wifi which worked seemingly everywhere and breakfast each morning was superb. We wanted to watch the rugby World Cup whilst we we were there and William was happy to work around us when providing breakfast. There were decorating issues as, for instance, the en-suite bathroom had clear signs of mould high up on the walls which needs addressing and the windows are single glazed so you need to use the heaters when it’s cold, BUT this is a big place with a very small staff for whom the ongoing maintainance of the buildings must be an enormous task. Overall, they have managed to make a very comfortable place out of a quirky old building but if you’re looking for big hotel chain standards of modernity then you’re in the wrong place. There is a small lane opposite , appropriately called Dark Lane which leads to the village which has two pubs , an Indian restaurant and a fish and chop shop . There’s very little traffic in the lane so take a torch and walk down it only takes 15 minutes. What impressed us most was the hospitality of our host who did everything to make our stay a comfortable one. More...

It was a beautiful wedding venue. We had quite a small wedding with around 60 guests for the wedding breakfast and the gatehouse restaurant fit us all prefectly, Carmino, the head chef and wedding planner was a fantastic help, giving us advice and suggestions throughout the planning process, and then enacting out all our plans flawlessly. Of course we couldn't have done it without all his help, as well as the help of all the great staff members. When we were booking wedding suppliers, the phrase "hidden gem" came up multiple times when asked where we were hosting out wedding, and I couldn't agreee more, Banwell Castle is indeed a hidden gem, and a fantastic wedding venue, thanks so much for everything! What a wonderful venue. The building itself does need some TLC but for us, this simply added to the charm of the place. Carmino, who organises the wedding ceremonies and meals, cannot be commended highly enough. He listened to what we wanted and the whole event was personalised for us. Warm, mulled cider was served to our small part,y as we waited for photographs to be completed on the terrace overlooking the beautiful Somerset countryside; the Peacocks proudly strutting around in the background. The three course meal served in the Gatehouse restaurant surpassed all of our expectations. Our guests are still 'raving' about the quality of the dishes prepared. Nothing was too much for Sharon and the staff and they were particularly patient with the children who were present. I have already passed on details to several colleagues who are looking for wedding venues next summer. Carmino and the team created a 'perfect day' for us. Many thanks.||We did not stay at the Castle but intend to have our 'honeymoon' night here as soon as possible. More...

This is a very quaint and unusual b and b and all the better for this. The four poster bed was very comfortable and the room although filled with old furniture was in keeping with the rest of the building. The breakfast cooked once by William and twice by Carmino and very filling and of good quality. Yes I agree that if a lot of money was thrown at the place it would enhance the appearance but it would destroy the charm. We had a meal in the Gatehouse and it was delicious and my partner who is not a dessert person finished every bit of the toffee cake and custard. The peacocks wandering the grounds and the other wildlife give the castle a great ambiance and I hope that William keeps things as they are. Cannot wait for our next visit. More...

Absolute lovely place to stay. Just remember it is a very old Castle and don't expect a totally airtight squeaky clean park Lane Hotel. That said we would far prefer the atmosphere in this Castle to any of the squeaky clean regimented establishments. We even brought our elderly friends from Weston on a previous visit for an evening meal laid on specially by the in-house Italian chef in The Gatehouse. He was totally excellent and would be game for any size party or wedding. We couldn't recommend it strongly enough for anybody that wants something a bit different. Well, actually, I can say a bit more. We stayed at Banwell Castle for 1 night on the way home from Lydford Gorge - we went a little bit out of our way to stay here because, well, it’s a castle. In fact, we actually changed the date of our trip to Lydford Gorge so that we could stay here. Because, you know, IT’S A CASTLE!||||Banwell impressed me from the start - through all my messing about with enquiring about various days and changing my mind, the owner was unbelievably responsive and helpful - email replies were instantaneous. The location itself was lovely - the castle really is wonderful and has just the right level of antiquity (some may say shabby but that’s being a bit unkind) to give it a lovely atmosphere. To our horror, there was a very loud wedding going on there, but the music was switched off at 11pm - not sure if this was a conscious decision by the hotel or if it was just a rubbish wedding - if it was the former, then it was much appreciated and showed consideration to the other guests. Less so, the ignorant moron staying in the room next to us who was in and out of his room all night and slammed the door. Every. Bloody. Time. In fact, that’s one of the drawbacks - paper thin walls. I even heard the aforementioned moron taking a pee at one point (yuck) but that’s the price you pay when you stay in old buildings so it didn’t really bother me too much. Breakfast was partially buffet and you could have a full English if you wanted. It was nice and relaxing being able to sit out in the conservatory and eat my egg and beans on toast, whilst looking out over misty green fields and watching the resident peacocks strutting their stuff outside.||||There are just a couple of areas they could improve on. Having a reception desk/area would be a good idea - it’s a big place and checking in and out was a bit confusing. We had to wander about looking for someone on arrival (and to find out where to park as the aforementioned wedding guests had chocked up the car park). On checking out, we eventually had to go into the kitchen and interrupt the poor guy cooking numerous breakfasts, so that we could pay for our stay and leave. The second point is that, whilst clean, the bedroom did look like it needed a little bit of TLC, there were cobwebs under the dresser and the TV had no signal. The bathroom, however, was spotless and looked very new - it consisted of a huge standalone bath in a tower room which was fantastic - I’d stay there again for that alone. Plus I’m not sure if the teddy bear in the cupboard was on purpose, but he looked very lonely in there and I wanted to take him home - please put him on proud display somewhere!||||I would highly recommend Banwell for a stay. There have been some reviews on here from people who seemed to expect the Dorchester. It’s very clear on Banwell’s website that it is a B&B rather than a hotel and the extremely reasonable prices reflect this. True, a little bit more TLC would improve it, but all in all, it does exactly what it says on the tin with the added bonus that you are staying in a unique and beautiful building. I would definitely stay here again and would recommend it to others. More...
