I recently moved to SF and am picky about who does my hair. I took a risk and tried out Atelier Emmanuel since the Yelp reviews looked great. I'm SO happy I did. I had Cassie color/balayage my hair and she did an amazing job. I didn't have a clear idea of what I wanted to do but she talked it out with me and I trusted her to do what made sense for my dark hair. It turned out incredible. In 8 years in San Francisco, I can say that I've found good hair stylists but not amazing hair stylists, until I've found Thomas at Atelier Emmanuel. Many stylists take time to listen to you but not for very long and they quickly assume they get what you want. Thomas took time to listen but also asked many precise and great questions to avoid subjective impressions and make sure we were on the same page. After the little "audit", what needed to be done was not exactly what I booked for so Thomas was very considerate and explained his plan as well as updated the quote for me so I knew in advance the final cost. Thomas is not only expert in his technique, I believe he has an extra talent beyond mastering  technique. Omg those balayages....If you follow his Instagram you will be blown away to see the before and after of his clients. Thomas is above average gifted. Beside that, he was very pleasant to chat with, a wonderful amount of discussion but also concentration which I loved. I left with a high-end new color that I've never managed to achieved in my life yet. Thomas gave me tailored advice to maintain it and explained what would be the touch-ups and next steps in a couple of months. 2 months later, the color still has dimension and evolved super nicely whereas in the past it would go brassy and faded in just a few weeks. Admittedly, I started coming here because I purchased a Groupon. I grew up a bit hair spoiled, relying on my Aunt to do all of my cut and colours my whole life. This meant I never felt comfortable paying much for a haircut.However, after I came to Atelier Emmanuel, I've been going back ever since. I was fortunate enough to have Cassie my first time around and I instantly fell in love with her. Amazing men's cuts too I was a client several years ago but my stylist moved abroad. After that I bounced around for a while. .never quite as happy as I was at Atelier Emmanuel. While I prefer high end salons, some are not so cool with precision men's barbering, catering more to female clients instead. Went back in today for a men's cut with Indelisa. She was wonderful from the start. Very engaging, asked me a lot of questions about my previous cuts and how I want my hair to look now. She is very warm and hospitable, as are all the other team members I encountered.  I walked out with a great cut that I am very happy with and my hour in the salon was a refreshing and restorative experience. Price was very fair for a high end salon downtown. After so many years I expected the prices to be very high now, as they are doing business in San Francisco after all. Seeing Emmanuel and Paul was a delight as well. Being treated well, looking good when it's over, and paying a fair price for the experience are essential hallmarks of a great luxury hair salon. As I said, Atelier Emmanuel closed one of their locations within the last year. I decided to come back to Atelier Emmanuel for an apprentice haircut. My hair is fairly simple for an Asian girl. No frills. Just trim the damn hair and don't cut it too short to make me look like a dork. Angela was the apprentice today and she did a good job I'd say. I was in for an hour. Emmanuel was not present as he is busy settling into the one space he has now in the FiDi. It was hard to find it, but I did with Google Maps. The next time I go I will get an apprentice to give a balayage and I decided that I would get a balayage once a year. That'll do for me. The apprentice haircut today was $30 with tax and tip. Cassie(spelling) was supervising the apprentices. It was a nice place to get a haircut and I would be repeat customer at Atelier. I have to cut corners on cost somewhere and my budget analyst says that I will get apprentice haircuts at Atelier Emmanuel in downtown SF for quite a while now. The other day I had an AMAZING experience with Cassie and Fatima. I believe today we went for a single process color service. My hair was very brassy and had a serious case of hot roots. From what I can tell, Cassie was very engaged on coaching Fatima throughout this service and ensured that I would leave the salon happy with the results. I learned so much about my hair just by observing, Cassie really does understand her craft and you can tell that she loves her job as an educator.Although it was such a simple service, it made a huge difference in my hair and I can now walk around not feeling like a zebra with the stripes on my head. They also gave me some shampoo/conditioner/hair mask samples for color treated hair! Such a great experience, I already had my next appointment scheduled and plan on purchasing the shampoo/conditioner they recommended. My whole experience at this salon was great. Krystal was amazing! Very talented and listened very closely to me. I hadn't had my hair done in 6+ months with some pretty dark roots. She did a cool toned balayage that I love. She was VERY engaged and obviously cares a lot about her work. Absolutely the best hair salon in the city. I originally was brought here because of a Groupon and I'm so glad I took a chance because I will go out of my way to keep coming back. Turns out all of my girlfriends come here too! I get cuts and the occasional balayage with Indelisa and she's great. I've been trying to find someone to do a particular haircut/style for years... To me it seems so simple. I want a long shag with lots and lots of layers. Today I met Cassie at Atelier Emmanuel on Claude. Cassie starts off with a consultation to make sure we are both on the same page then off to the shampoo bowl. This bowl is amazing!!! I believe the chair was giving me a massage at the same time Cassie was massaging my head/washing my hair. Very nice experience.  Cassie not only knows how to do a long shag, she loves doing them. I watched her work magic with her razor. She followed my natural curls and knew just where to cut to make my curls fall perfectly around my face. Cassie even got me to try going with curly bangs. Honestly, I wasn't sure but I trusted Cassie and the vision she had for my hair. So glad I did... I love love love this cut. I walked out of the salon with a little bit more pep in my step. I loved my old color, but recently moved to SF and knew it was time to find a new local salon. I am glad I did my research, Krystal was perfect. We had a real consultation (where I felt like she was actually hearing me and not just nodding her head), and the color turned out beautiful, natural, and almost exactly like my previous color. Unfortunately, her and I are not very good at before and after photos, but we will have time to practice because I am definitely coming back. On a personal note, she had another client who was finishing up and seemed down. Krystal went out of her way to style her hair and tell her jokes and make her smile again. I can't say enough great things about my experience. I emailed them on short notice (right before Christmas) for a color and trim. I was immediately and luckily given an appt the same day with Mari and Miguel. They did amazing! Miguel knew what I wanted off the bat which was to tone down my balayage but still keep some warmth. Color only took an hr (super quick!) and then Mari gave me the best trim to revive my hair. They're super friendly and take the time to listen to your vision to give you the best results. I've never felt romantic love for a stylist before, but there's a first time for everything - including me finding a hairstyle I actually love! Cassie gave me the best hairstyle I've had in my adult life, and I finally like my hair! Seriously guys. It's been 20 years of "meh." 2 important things:1. I say "hairstyle" because it was more than a cut - Cassie also taught me how to style it, and how to take care of it so it looks even better in the future. She understood my difficult, fine-as-hell and super thin hair (despite having a magnificent mane of her own that is nothing like mine) and knew exactly how to handle it, including cut, style, and ongoing care. You can tell that she's an educator at heart (she taught in the past and currently mentors trainees at the salon), and she takes this aspect as seriously as she does the immediate treatment/haircut. (LOVE THAT.) She pointed out that if she gives a great cut and sends someone out the door with no idea how to style or maintain it, then she hasn't done her job (and that person probably won't end up liking the cut because they don't know how to manage it). This was all KEY for me, because I am a hair idiot and I have no idea how to handle my kinda-difficult hair (difficult only in that it's so flat and fine that I've never been able to do much w it). So I really wanted to learn, and happily, I did. She is extremely knowledgeable, and I learned a lot about hair in general, my hair type, cutting and coloring. She also gave me a lovely part-balayage, part-highlights color that I just love, and that apparently is going to be pretty low-key to maintain. All this, for me?!2. Cassie is just generally THE BEST. I told her that I didn't know what would look best with my hair/face and I had some pictures/ideas, but I wanted her to tell me "no" if something wouldn't work. She immediately responded, "No is the most complete sentence in the world." - YES. IN LOVE. I do NOT want a yes-man stylist, I want someone who'll give me real talk and straight up tell me NO if I'm going to do something dumb! Hair isn't my area, it's hers. So I love her. Also, that's just good life advice for anyone, anytime. I loved the salon in general, but I REALLY love Cassie. Guys, I feel like I won the Tinder lottery - but even better, because everyone knows you can be with a hair stylist for life. I just want to say how pleased and delighted I am with Indelisa's prowess with the scissors. She gave me the best cut I have had in years. And it held up past the initial "wow" factor. She definitely got a feel for my hair type and the texture to give me the best cut possible that would frame my face and be easy to maintain. Was really nervous about my balayage because it had been years; I did tons of research and decided to request Krystal (I booked the appt before the Groupon to ensure I could get her). Alejandra has given me the best hair color of my life! She and Cassie sat me down and explained to me how to get the color Ive been seeking for years! Turns out tinting and highlift bleaching aren't right for me. Instead, Alejandra has been doing beautiful highlighting and toning. So now my hair isn't brassy from tinting or over processed from tinting, & my silver greys look like sparkly platinum accent pieces!
