My rescue dog Ellie was not socialized well and I was having problems with her being reactive with other dogs as well as people. I started out with Puppy 1 at Sherwood Barks, and then took Puppy 2 elsewhere to be closer to home. Well, I was quickly back at Sherwood Barks as there was no comparison in the quality of the classes and instruction provided. We have since taken the Reactive Leash Training and have continued on with Small Dog Agility and in winter, Small Dog Play Group. Sherwood Barks offers an amazing variety of classes along with private sessions if you need to work on something specific. The Lead Trainer Jen is amazing and really knows her stuff, and Ashton and the rest of the staff are also knowledgeable, approachable and friendly. I find all of them genuinely care about helping you learn to train your dog in a positive force-free way and they are always willing to answer any questions or offer advice to address issues. The environment itself is large and clean, by far the nicest facility I have seen, with a great variety of agility equipment. Jen and Ashton incorporate lots of fun games into the classes and I really like that there is a 15 minute "play time" prior to all classes - this gives the dogs time to sniff each other's butts and play before getting down to the business of training. Trying to attend to all of the dogs and owners (and second owners) during class can be chaotic and challenging for the staff but I find that Jen's no-nonsense approach works perfectly for maximum efficiency and safety - she doesn't waste time coddling the owners but rather tells us exactly what we need to know in order to attain success with the dogs, which is exactly what I am paying for. They also follow up with e-mails with "homework", providing videos and instructions to practice between classes. We have fun and I have found that all of us look forward to reconnecting each week at agility class. It is truly apparent that Jen's main focus is in helping the owners and dogs develop a happy and positive relationship with each other so that learning becomes second nature. She is definitely passionate about what she does and my Ellie just loves her (when Jen comes too close, Ellie often loses her focus as she's trying to get Jen's attention!) Other clients have commented on how Ellie's behavior has improved over the months with Jen's training methods and that she's like a different (friendlier!) dog now. I'm so happy I can take her anywhere with me now without worrying about her earlier reactive behaviors.I have recommended Sherwood Barks to several friends who have all been very happy with their experiences too and have continued to take additional classes with Jen and gang. Thanks Sherwood Barks! You guys are fantastic! More...

My dog started puppy 1 at the ripe old age of 6 months....making him the senior of his class! He loved the free time play and showed significant improvement in his behaviour during his first session as well as in Puppy 2. Both instructors have a wealth of knowledge and the positive approach makes training a good time for all involved. Regular practice makes a huge impact and we found that the behaviours we worked on consistently really got better, making the time and effort so rewarding. I am looking forward to Puppy 3 and some agility training! More...

We love Sherwood Barks and wish we had gone sooner with our other dogs!! We, along with our mini bernedoodle Odin, learned so much in Puppy 1 and 2, and we loved watching him grow. The classes gave us confidence in knowing that we CAN have well-rounded and socialized pets. Jen and Ashton are friendly, incredibly passionate, and only want to see you and your pup form a happy and healthy relationship. If you put in the work, It. Will. Pay. Off. We did lose sight of how important practice and consistency are sometime after classes ended, but Sherwood Barks also does house calls! Jen came over one afternoon (and boy, did Odin remember her!) and after a quick and much needed wake-up call, she reviewed the techniques that we were struggling with with the pups in their very own home. Her passion for happy, trained pets really shines through and helped motivate us to continue on with the training journey! More...

What a wonderful place to bring your puppy! Before we started puppy classes, I was sure my little girl thought her name was Daisy-No! , but 'no' is rarely used since. Not only do we learn to walk nicely and come when called with a crazy tail going, and to play with her own toys and not hands, feet, ankles, but the positive reinforcement philosophy applies to everything you want for your puppy to understand about how you want to live with them. It's so simple, you change in a day!And about the Daycare, I have focus at work because my puppy is so excited the minute she sees the staff - and then dances at the entry to get to her buddies. Staff are the best! They're so happy to see her, too! They keep that place clean, never a stench when you enter doors. And never a stinky dog when you pick them up!Loving it! More...

We took our pup here for puppy 1 and 2 classes after a poor experience elsewhere. Jen (the owner) answered all our questions and reservations and we decided to try it. It was well worth it and our sassy Miniature Schnauzer has very good manners during dinner, great door etiquette, loose leash walking (well.. most of the time) and is well socialized. They separate dogs by size and temperament and allow only one person training the dog at a time to avoid chaos. If you're struggling they will use your dog as an example and do little fun contests throughout the course. The best thing I found they let the dogs have little play sessions through the lesson to reward them for paying attention during the class and tire them out. Now after our pup has graduated we make the drive for their daycare program every now and then. My dog is pretty reserved with people but he loves the girls there and pulls every time to get to the door. Now they offer a grooming service too! Thank you for taking great care of Talos! More...

We joined Sherwood Barks for agility when my pup was already 3 years so had already done some puppy training elsewhere. I wished we had found Jen and Ashton earlier. Our experience has been nothing short of fantastic. It took me a bit to unlearn some of the things I had been doing in order to get the best from my dog. The force free methods used, teach your dog to want to do what you ask. There is a great balance between work and play every class. It is very evident that Jen and Ashton have a passion for dogs! Over the past 10 years we have had 3 puppies go through Sherwood Bark’s puppy training. We love the positive approach used with the puppies in class. When learning is through play, they love to play the game. We think that our puppies also learn faster through play. We love that socializing is integrated into all puppy classes. It means that our puppies get along well with other dogs so they do well in the off-leash parks and are happy to stop playing to come to us when called. The daycare staff are the best, I come home at the end of the day with a played out pup! Also, we've loved the leash reactivity training. We've taken other reactivity courses, but Jen has such a great way of explaining things, and there is so much realistic practice during class, it really sets the course apart. After just 3 weeks, I walked my dog this evening, past other reactive dogs, on a loose leash with no prayers said. I am positive we will never have to take another leash reactivity course again. I was skeptical at first considering the mixed reviews, and when we received the class item list for Puppy Class 1, seeing a clicker had me on the fence. But after a few classes with my puppy, I will definitely be a loyal and returning student to Sherwood Barks. We moved here from California over the past year and a half with our dogs, and have worked with lots of trainers and training businesses with many different types of dogs from different cases and situations. I come from a background of animal lovers and trainers, and have spent my entire upbringing learning and working with dogs and horses specifically. We brought our bulldog and pitbull mix from Cali with us, and got an Akbash LGD mix this previous fall. In this time of business and still moving, we found ourselves needing to find training and socialization classes for her very quickly. Her reaction to fear was unacceptable and I was stressed from moving and at a total loss. It's very clear out of the reviews who has had dogs before and has some knowledge in training vs those who are first time dog owners and unaware of a lot to do with dog training. The negative reviews are left by those who seem to know nothing, and positive by lifelong dog owners and successful agility dog owners. Our puppy is fearful and reacts with aggression, but Jen really made the experience less daunting for her and myself. I was worried that in such a large group, that she would be overwhelmed and it would turn worst case scenario but she kept an eye on my puppy's anxiety and worked with our situation with total ease. Jen is very obviously a professional and skilled, she knows what she's doing and if you've felt "talked down to", it's probably because you were either doing something unsafe or stupid, or you're oversensitive. Ashton is equally as professional as Jen and handled the class very well. My puppy is fine with people, but shy, and with Ashton she was gazing after her the entire class and being visibly excited when she entered the puppy pen. Our puppy is in love with the staff, and the methods used are safe, effective and solid for any dog. We can't wait to put our other dogs into classes with Sherwood Barks and whatever puppies we may have in the future. I highly recommend this business for anyone who wants honest and reliable dog training from someone straight forward and very experienced. More...

We absolutely love taking puppy classes at Sherwood Barks. Jen is a fantastic dog trainer and her methods of positive behaviour training work extremely well. As brand new puppy owners, we took our first dog there in November. In the first couple classes you go from not knowing where to start with that cute, poorly behaved pup to having a tried-and-true method of working with your puppy. That puppy unfortunately passed away when we were pedestrians hit by a vehicle that ran a red light, and Jen was totally sympathetic and issued us a refund. She even took the time to email back and forth to make sure we were okay, and offered advice on what to look for with the insurance settlement. We got a new puppy shortly after and have completed Puppy 1 and are part way through Puppy 2. Our second puppy was extremely timid and nervous around other dogs, but the socializing at the start of classes changed that. He now has the confidence to play with other dogs. Puppy 1 taught us how to train the puppy and got him going on the basic commands that every dog should know. The videos that accompany the lessons are great reminders of everything that they covered during class and provide more to practice for when the dog is ready. Our puppy is doing extremely well in Puppy 2 and we are loving the new content. There is no way that that he could have retained all this new information along with the first course. He needed to work on and practice the basics, so we were happy to take the second course. The content scaffolding and order in which the courses are taught make absolute sense so that the puppy and owners can be successful with practice. All of the trainers offered tips along the way for dealing with other problems that came up extra to the course. They also make sure students get one-in-one time during classes to receive feedback. We highly recommend Sherwood Barks to anyone who is willing to work and receive feedback so their puppy will be well-behaved. We look forward to having our puppy in doggy day care and absolutely trust all the trainers here. More...

We are so grateful for the staff and facility at Sherwood Barks and highly recommend them to other dog owners. Our poodle pup needed a lot of work around socializing so we've added the daycare experience a couple of times a week to her puppy classes. What a difference it has made! Sherwood Barks staff are experienced, honest/direct, and really structure things for maximum safety as well as interaction. This can be a tough line to walk and we've had a negative experience elsewhere where the organization didn't support safety of the smaller dogs. What helps our experience be so wonderful? Leave ego at the door and soak as much feedback up as you can. Trust the experience of the trainers and daycare staff. Their force-free methods are excellent and you will see results if you practice their strategies. The homework videos are extra helpful. Staff here truly love dogs and have so much insight into how to understand their doggy minds and hearts. We are happy to see our friends joining the Sherwood Barks community, too - especially the small dog Sundays. If you have a small dog, this is one of the best ways to spend your Sunday.
