I've been a member of the gym for 1.5 years. I find the atmosphere of Genesis is unique. It is very kid-friendly and roughly half of the kickboxing class is comprised of women. The classes are centred around solid instruction. Learning proper techniques is the goal for every session. If you are new to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu or Muay Thai kickboxing, you are more than welcome to give it a try. Ask about the one-week trial. If you are more experienced, you'll find the instructors are well-equipped to provide high quality instruction. By far the best martial arts gym in the Fraser valley. I have been training for one month at this location with no prior Jiu-Jitsu experience. The gym is top level. It's a large space that is well taken care of on a daily basis. Mats are the highest quality and sanitized after every training session. Two bathrooms, a shower, an office, a lobby, a changing room, and kitchenette with a living area for students to relax before or after class. The atmosphere here is really special. From the first time on the Mats, you feel like you are part of a team or family. People of all ages and physical ability are willing and eager to help with tips and instruction for newer students while practicing techniques and drilling. The instructors are extremely high level with a very respected lineage in the Jiu-Jitsu sphere. Classes usually consist of a good portion of drilling and learning technique and getting corrections from the instructors, with around half of the 1.5hr class being devoted to 'rolling' or the Jiu-Jitsu equivalent of sparing.The gym offers classes for toddlers, children, teens and adults, as well as classes in Thai kickboxing. The kickboxing is very gender neutral with usually half the class being made up of women. Men and women both regularly train at this gym through the week and the beauty of Jiu-Jitsu is that a smaller framed individual is very much capable of working with a much larger partner and still making the techniques work.Overall, this gym is a very fun place to train, no matter what your level or experience. New students are welcome at any time and the gym offers classes 7 days a week. Weather you work in the day or the evening, there is a class time that works for you. Don't bother trying to get in shape before you start. The movements in Jiu-Jitsu will challenge you regardless of your fitness level. The best way to get in shape for this stuff is to actually do it. I've lost 20 pounds already while having fun wrestling like a kid again. It's a much better routine than going and running a treadmill 3 times a week. My wife and I have been involved with Genesis Martial Arts since they opened in Abbotsford in 2013. The owners and coaches have produced an atmosphere of excellence and strong support. There are classes for hobbyists and for those interested in competition. The coaching is world class and those you train with become like family. Some of the best talent Canada has to offer! Coaches Jason and Shawn are both very hands on and detailed in their approach. All of the drills and techniques in class are explained well and thoroughly broken down for everyone. Well spoken and with patience, they usually make it around to spend time with each person on the mats and answer your questions or ideas you have about the technique. They run a traditional feeling structure but manage to also keep things relaxed and never feeling too formal, often joking with the class to keep things fun. Great team of people! Glad to take part!
