About

My clients are looking for considered design solutions, to enhance their lives. They are looking to make small spaces work better, looking for someone who will think of the details, but who will also create a quietly beautiful whole. I integrate gardens into my architectural designs.

Alison was wonderful to work with and I highly recommend her / Studio Alison Binks. She was solution orientated and nothing was problem. She approached our project with great enthusiasm and we are ever so happy with the outcome. We will definitely be using SAB for our upcoming projects. More...

Residential Interior Designers

Alison was a lucky find. She responded very quickly to my initial inquiry on Bark and again each and every time I emailed with questions. I had never engaged an Interior designer before and was nervous about the process and how much input I was able to have. Alison made me feel very comfortable to share any thoughts I already had about the project but also calmly offered her expertise, bringing a sense of continuity of design to the renovation as a whole. Before hand, I was swimming in a sea of options thinking I could manage. Alison's design skills provided me with many storage and layout ideas that I would never have been able to come up with. Q&As

The first step is to meet with the client in their home. If the clients are a couple it is best to meet with both people early in the process (to avoid becoming a marriage counsellor later on). I listen to the dreams of my clients. Absorb as much as I can about how they wish to live and the feel of the their current home.
Usually I'll write a fee proposal after this meeting - once I have an idea of their budget and the scope of works they are seeking from me.
From this point it is a step by step from initial concept ideas through to approved designs and documentation. I work fairly informally, keeping up a dialogue with the client through email or phone or whatever method they prefer. Some clients are more hands-on than others. It is a matter of getting a feel for the process they prefer, making sure they are excited about each decision, but always steering the ship.
I try to look at each project from an angle others might not, always seeking to achieve something better than the client thought possible.
I invoice clients at the end of each step and they are free to opt for simply a concept design or a fully documented and supervised build, or anything in between.

I look at each project with fresh eyes. Generally I don't think in terms of 'styles'. I think about what will work best amongst what exists already, what will suit the client best. My work may be eclectic, but it is also contemporary in approach.

I love coming up with ideas to surprise and delight my clients. I love nutting out planning conundrums or resolving details, producing an end result that feels effortless even though there are usually pages of sketches and scribbles behind it.

Initially friends approached me to design for them. I set up the studio workspace I'd always dreamed of and the business developed from there.

Clients who are looking for clever solutions to their design problems should choose me. What I offer is the opposite to someone who rolls out the same solutions from the same magazines for each project. Perhaps they look good in the initial photos, but do they work for you and make best use of your funds?
Clients who are looking for someone who is responsive to their needs and ways of living, who listens to them and involves them in the process, should choose me.
If you are looking for someone to look at your whole home - garden, inside, outside - and bring new ideas, connecting it all together, then I may be the designer for you.

It is always best to get the 'feel' of a place and even more importantly meet the people face to face. If this is not possible there are certain types of work that can be done remotely. Check out my quick fix kitchen or bathroom offer for example: https://www.studioalisonbinks.com/quick-fix-kitchens-bathrooms

Except for interacting with clients and builders my work is quite independent and isolated to my own studio. Therefore I have been reasonably safe from the virus. There have been times when I can't visit my clients' homes. That has been difficult. But now I am able to visit you in your home and happy to wear a mask.

Services

I offer a personalised design service for residential or other smaller scale projects - extensions, renovations or new homes. I enjoy the small scale - joinery design, making tight spaces functional, but part of my background is in managing large scale, complex projects. I offer a full range of design services from conceptual design though to construction supervision. Alternatively clients might seek a conceptual solution only. This is a good way to receive a professional design concept, for a lower fixed fee, which you can then take to a draftsperson or work on yourself.

Especially relevant during the Lockdown is a kitchen or bathroom fixed fee service I'm offering. All you need is a tape measure and a phone to take some photos and I'll work with you remotely to put together a conceptual design package for your room.
