Coaching, at its simplest, is a partnership between a coach and a client. The coach helps the client achieve whatever change he or she desires and proceed in whichever direction he or she wants. The coach is a partner who stands beside the client as the client assumes responsibility for identifying their goals, assessing their strengths and areas for development, and finding their own solutions. Coaching, in other words, is a collaborative, co-creative journey. It is not for the coach to analyze the root causes of the client’s problems, or to advise on how to solve problems, or to educate about what to do or what not to do. The coach’s job is to assist clients discover and mobilize their internal strengths and external resources to obtain sustainable change.
