What makes a great website?
Your website satisfies user intent and has a clear goal. Your website should have technical prowess and should be trustworthy, safe and secure. You also need to consider user experience. Which is not only how something looks, but also how it feels. It’s about giving users an enjoyable experience, something they will remember. UX is also not letting users wait long for your pages to load, getting them frustrated because they can’t read the text on your site thanks to your color scheme or because they can’t hit the buttons on your mobile site. Think to yourself: how can I turn any possible frustration on my website into happiness?
What questions might you ask a client when starting a new project?
1. What are the objectives/goals of this project? What’s the importance of this project?
Don’t be afraid to ask the client and stakeholder(s) to clarify/elaborate on what they are really trying to achieve.
2. Who are the key stakeholders? Who influences, and who has the potential to be an obstacle (a rarely asked question)?
3. What defines success for the project? Knowing what success would look like can help you and your team stay focused and make important decisions throughout the duration of the project.
4. What are the key milestones? What are the timelines and most important dates?
5. What are the biggest obstacles to getting the project done? What are the implications if the project doesn’t succeed? How much risk are you willing to take to accomplish the project?
What do you love most about your job?
Overall yes, it suits me well. I’m old enough that I’ve been through some other careers though. There are still days and tasks that are struggles. There are things you want to do that you can’t make time for. There are things you don’t want to do that are required. You don’t always get listened too when you try to tell bosses/customers important things are missing/being neglected. There are occasionally time crunches and unrealistic goals. I don’t know of a well paying job for which these things aren’t true.
By far, most days I get to work on my computer and get to focus on my tasks. I figure out my way forward (even though the main subject of what I’m working on is chosen for me). I get the satisfaction of seeing things that I figured out how to make work on the screen in front of me. Sometimes other people appreciate them too!
When things go wrong, the pressure is on and a lot of people can be counting on you. It’s a stressful time, but it’s a fun time too (as long as it gets solved relatively quickly). It’s a rush when it works out well and leaves you feeling really satisfied on one hand, and a little frustrated that you didn’t see it coming on the other.
Like most things in life, it is what you make of it. If you look for reasons to appreciate it, you will find them. If you look for reasons to be frustrated, you will find them too. The only thing I really think you need to enjoy web development is being able to celebrate little wins as they come along. You’ll spend a lot of time thinking hard frustrated on the puzzles in front of you. As long as enjoying the win of solving them is worth it, you can enjoy the job.
What inspired you to start your own business?
Behind every business is the story of why it was started. Maybe it was to solve a problem the founder was experiencing. Perhaps it was to capitalize on a gap in the marketplace, or even address an important social issue. Whatever the reason, most entrepreneurs are very passionate about their "why" and love sharing it with fellow business owners.
